How do plant growth regulators work?
All plants produce hormones which regulate their growth and development, and how they respond to stimuli from the environment. Plant growth regulators or PGRs are often used in agriculture to enhance plant growth and protect yields.
PGRs are similar to chemical messengers which transmit signals within the plant. They can either promote or inhibit plant growth depending on their type, and they also play a key role in protecting against lodging as well as flowering, fruiting, and seed germination. PGRs are classed as growth promoters which include Auxins, Gibberellins, and Cytokinins. Abscisic acid and Ethylene are plant growth inhibitors.
Why are they important?
Plant growth regulators work on plants at a cellular level to modify and regulate plant growth by influencing aspects of development like plant height, seed development, fruit ripening, and flowering. Application of PGRs to plant roots, leaves, and shoots can also protect them from pests, diseases, and abiotic stresses like drought or temperature extremes. This makes it possible for you to protect crop yield and quality even in less-than-optimal soil and environmental conditions.
Are biostimulants and plant growth regulators the same thing?
While biostimulants and PGRs both help to improve plant growth, they do this in different ways. PGRs directly affect plant growth in a targeted way whereas biostimulants support plant health and improve nutrient uptake, creating the ideal conditions for growth.
How will I benefit from the use of plant growth regulators?
PGRs can help:
Protect yield and quality of cereal crops by preventing lodging and enhancing the uniformity of grain size and shape.
Control plant growth, particularly height and the size of leaves.
Protect plants from stress such as pests, diseases, and extreme weather conditions.
Using PGRs like MODDUS® helps regulate growth to reduce the chance of crops developing a large amount of top growth. Having an excessive amount of top growth makes crops more prone to disease. With less energy directed to forming the top growth, more can be diverted to the development of strong roots, creating a healthier plant. By preventing crops from growing too high, MODDUS® can also help prevent lodging so you can achieve higher yields and improved grain quality.
