After 15+ years of R&D, Syngenta achieved an official registration of a Hybrid Wheat variety in Europe in February 2026.

Syngenta is planning to launch X-TERRA® Hybrid Wheat in 2027 in the UK.

What makes X-TERRA® Hybrid Wheat different?

X-TERRA® is bred using a type of natural sterility called Cytoplasmic Male Sterility (CMS).

Breeding using natural sterility is a way to produce reliable hybrids by using plants that are unable to self‑pollinate, ensuring controlled cross‑pollination and exploiting hybrid vigour. The female line is planted alongside a fertile pollinator. Wind carries pollen to the sterile plants. The seed harvested is hybrid, combining traits from both parents.

What does hybrid vigour actually deliver?

When two genetically distinct parents are crossed, the result is a plant that outperforms either parent - this is called heterosis, or hybrid vigour. In X-TERRA® wheat, this means:
