Enhance early crop development with MAXICROP® Seaweed Extracts

When under pressure, crops naturally produce stress-mitigating compounds. MAXICROP® enhances these compounds' effectiveness during early growth stages, improving crop establishment and growth in challenging conditions. This boost helps increase root and shoot biomass, strengthening plants from the start even in suboptimal environments.

MAXICROP® is a tried and trusted brand in many crops ranging from vegetables like spinach and broccoli, top fruit, soft fruit as well as broad acre crops like oil seed rape and cereals. MAXICROP® is the main brand for a family of products where MAXICROP® Concentrate and MAXICROP® Triple are two well known solutions.

Key components in MAXICROP®

The MAXICROP® process focuses on extracting specific components from the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, for example Mannitol and Fucoidans, both belonging to the group of polysaccharides. Another unique component targeted in the extraction process is betaines, which belong to a larger class of compounds known as osmoprotectants.

Polysaccharides: Mannitol, Fucoidans

Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates that serve various structural and functional roles, including energy storage, cell wall formation, and protection against environmental stresses.

Osmoprotectants: Betaines

An osmoprotectant is an organic molecule that accumulates in cells to help maintain cellular balance and protect against damage during periods of osmotic stress, such as drought.

Benefits of MAXICROP® to your crops

Mannitol

Mannitol

Keeps the water retention in the plant cells, important during drought.

Fucoidans

The science behind MAXICROP®

The powerful formula of MAXICROP® harnesses the unique properties of Ascophyllum nodosum, a seaweed species thriving in the challenging Arctic waters Norway. This exceptional environment contributes to the seaweed's remarkable characteristics.

Seaweed close-up in natural environment

Extreme growing conditions

Ascophyllum nodosum inhabits the intertidal zone, here, it faces numerous stress factors as it alternates between submersion and air exposure:

  • Extreme temperature fluctuations (both cold and hot)
  • High salinity levels
  • Intense light exposure during extended summer days

Bioactive molecules

As a result of its challenging habitat, Ascophyllum Nodosum produces a diverse array of bioactive molecules. The specific components in the end product of MAXICROP® depend on multiple key factors:

  • The unique properties of this particular seaweed species
  • The age of the seaweed
  • The time of year it is harvested and the quality of the harvesting procedure
  • The specialised extraction process employed

Extraction process

The technology used to extract the compounds of MAXICROP® is a hot pressurised alkaline process. The process known as "the MAXICROP® process" is developed to get the specific substances extracted without altering them.

Trials results

Broccoli and cauliflower heads treated with MAXICROP® Triple display clear differences when compared to untreated heads.

Treated with MAXICROP® Triple
Untreated Broccoli

Q&A

What makes MAXICROP® unique compared to other products on the market?

+

MAXICROP® stands out due to: Sustainable sourcing of raw materials from ALGEA in Norway, unique knowledge linking extracts with plant/soil response, 70+ years of success and trust in the field, & it is the first and most researched seaweed extract (SWE) biostimulant in the UK.

Are all seaweeds the same in biostimulants?

+

No, seaweeds vary greatly. MAXICROP® uses Ascophyllum nodosum from Norway, with 70+ years of innovation backing its formulation. The extraction process and proportion of active ingredients determine the agronomic benefits.

What is a seaweed extract (SWE)?

+

SWEs contain multiple bioactive molecules, including polysaccharides, polyphenols, nutrients, sterols, and polyamines. The unique combination of these components creates the extract profile that benefits plants.

How is MAXICROP® extracted?

+

MAXICROP® uses a patented heat and steam cell burst process (hydrolysis), focusing on compounds that reduce oxidative stress in plants.

Can MAXICROP® block spray nozzles?

+

No, MAXICROP® is a soluble SWE and doesn't cause problems when applied through spray equipment.

When is the best time to apply MAXICROP®?

+

The greatest positive influence is in the early development stages, from seed/establishment through to early fruit set.

Does a plant need to be stressed for MAXICROP® to be beneficial?

+

No, while stressed crops show the biggest yield uplift, MAXICROP® helps optimise potential yield by steering plants through continuous, lesser stresses in real-world conditions.

What is Ascophyllum Nodosum?

+

Ascophyllum nodosum is a brown algae of the Fucaceae family, that grows only in the intertidal region of the northern Atlantic Sea. Ascophyllum nodosum lives and grows under different stressful conditions which influence the chemical composition of the seaweed, forcing them to evolve chemical means as a response to each kind of challenge given by nature.
