Spring barley's establishment period is critical yet challenging to manage because of unpredictability

Weather, soil type and moisture conditions will have a big impact on nutrient availability and uptake, which can be especially challenging on typically lighter soil types used for growing malting barley.

NUELLO® iN provides a nitrogen source that supports your crop through varying conditions, ensuring a strong start. Use seeds treated with NUELLO® iN to enhance crop vigour, roots and yields with standard nitrogen applications, especially where access to nitrogen from the soil is limited.

Grain N % remains unaltered with NUELLO® iN: Proven across 3 years of testing

A common question about NUELLO® iN is if it increases % grain N. This has been monitored in trials across 3 seasons (2022 - 2024) and 12 trials across 8 locations, showing no effect on % grain N.

Enhanced crop vigour

Using NUELLO® iN on spring crops consistently shows increased crop vigour and greening across different seasons. As the bacteria in NUELLO® iN colonise and fix nitrogen from the start of germination, it supports the plant through different phases of establishment, resulting in positive effects on crop vigour.

The pictures below show two examples of how treating crops with NUELLO® iN can lead to remarkable effects on crop vigour and greening.

Improved rooting

One of the advantages of using NUELLO® iN is that it supports the plant right from the start. As the bacteria colonise the roots from the stage of germination, it enhances root growth, which encourages the crop to more effectively access nutrients in the soil.

Yield benefits when nitrogen uptake is limited

Due to the relatively short growing season of Spring Barley, it is crucial to ensure a strong start in root development and tillering to maximise the crop's potential.

NUELLO® iN proves especially valuable in seasons where nitrogen uptake is limited by wet or dry conditions, acting as a backup source of nitrogen.

In seasons where nitrogen uptake has been restricted due to either dry or wet weather conditions, trials using NUELLO® iN have demonstrated yield benefits, as shown below.

NUELLO® iN enhances Spring Barley yield in dry conditions

Yield benefits in dry conditions

In dry conditions, nitrogen uptake by the plant is compromised and yield potential gets under pressure.

In the dry spring of 2022, an average of 3 trials across 3 sites show NUELLO® iN + VIBRANCE® Duo had a yield benefit compared to seeds treated with VIBRANCE® Duo only. Variety: LAUREATE.

Yield benefits in wet conditions

Yield benefits in wet conditions. After wet autumn/winters, soil nitrogen levels are depleted due to leaching through the winter months.

Following the very wet autumn and winter period of 2023/2024, trials showed NUELLO® iN + VIBRANCE® Duo had a yield benefit, compared to seeds treated with VIBRANCE® Duo only. Variety: LAUREATE.

Frequently asked questions

What is NUELLO® iN?

+

NUELLO® iN is a seed treatment that provides your spring barley with a steady nitrogen source to support it through potential adverse environmental conditions.

Why is NUELLO® iN beneficial for spring barley?

+

Spring barley's establishment period is critical yet challenging due to unpredictable weather, soil type, and moisture conditions. NUELLO® iN enhances crop vigour, roots, and yields, especially when access to nitrogen from the soil is limited.

What are the key benefits of using NUELLO® iN on Spring Barley?

+

Increased crop vigour in challenging conditions, yield benefits when nitrogen uptake is limited & an improved rooting system

Does NUELLO® iN affect grain nitrogen content?

+

No. Trials across 3 seasons (2022-2024) and 12 trials across 8 locations show no effect on % grain N.

How does NUELLO® iN enhance crop vigour?

+

The bacteria in NUELLO® iN colonise and fix nitrogen as germination starts, supporting the plant through different establishment phases, resulting in increased crop vigour and greening.

How does NUELLO® iN improve rooting?

+

NUELLO® iN supports the plant right from the start. As bacteria colonise the roots from germination, it enhances root growth, allowing the crop to effectively access soil nutrients.

Is NUELLO® iN effective across different seasons?

+

Yes, NUELLO® iN shows yield benefits across trials and seasons, proving its value as a "backup generator" when the crops' nitrogen uptake is limited.

How does NUELLO® iN work in different soil conditions?

+

By fixing nitrogen from the air, NUELLO® iN bridges potential gaps in nitrogen availability that can occur due to wet or dry conditions and light or shallow soils, supplementing growth.
