SY CHEER: a very welcome addition to the Group 1 milling market in the East
UKFM have granted SY CHEER full Group 1 status and it looks set to be an excellent addition to the high quality milling market. Kathryn Hamlen, Seeds Marketing Manager says, "the popularity of Group 1 wheat varieties has been in decline in recent seasons, dropping from 31% of the wheat area in 2020 to only 24% in 2024. We believe SY CHEER has the right agronomic profile to help reverse this trend and help secure the market of home grown quality wheat".
Seeds Technical Manager, Matt Bull praises SY CHEER's overall profile and says “Not only does SY CHEER have class leading physical grain quality, it also buys us some management flexibility. We continue to experience more and more volatile weather patterns, and the last few seasons have made it very challenging to get spray applications on at optimal timings, leaving wheat plants more exposed to disease pressure”.
SY CHEER brings a robust overall disease profile which drives high untreated yield compared to current market favourites.
Below we can see the rust infection scored in 2024 AHDB Recommended List trials. SY CHEER shows the lowest levels of rust in general. The combination of high yellow rust resistance and good brown rust resistance really shows the value of this variety.

Matt Bull continued to say: “it is not just about untreated yield. Our fungicide interaction trials have shown that if you let rusts get away, they don't just hammer yield, but also grain quality – particularly specific weight. Having a variety with a robust disease resistance profile will help protect both yield and grain quality which will help to get those premiums that milling wheat growers are targeting” .
There is C2 seed available in the market for planting this autumn. Contact your local seed merchant for availability
