Top-yielding winter malting barley gains full approval for brewing use
Electrum, the highest-yielding winter malting barley variety on the AHDB Recommended List, has achieved an important milestone with news that it has also been awarded Full Approval for brewing use on the Malting Barley Committee (MBC) Approved List of varieties for harvest 2021.
Boasting a UK treated yield equivalent to 9.7 t/ha, Electrum is also one of the earliest-maturing winter barleys on the AHDB Recommended List, says Syngenta seeds marketing manager for conventional cereals, Tracy Creasy.
It joins two other winter barley varieties with Full Approval for brewing use on the MBC List – Craft and Flagon. All three varieties are from the Syngenta malting barley breeding programme.
“Other developments from the Syngenta malting barley programme include the addition of the new, high-yielding spring barley varieties, SY Splendor and SY Tungsten, to the new MBC Approved List,” says Mrs Creasy.
“SY Splendor, which has the highest UK treated yield figure on the AHDB spring barley Recommended List, has been added to the MBC List with Provisional Approval 1 for brewing use. SY Tungsten, which equals SY Splendor for yield in the North, has been added to the MBC List with Provisional Approval 1 for both brewing and malt distilling uses,” she adds.
