Robot wars heads to the fields
The Field Robot Event rolls out today – with the Syngenta-sponsored team from Harper Adams University, and their robot, ERIC, representing the UK in the International Event.
Taking place at Bernburg-Strenzfield in Germany this week (12-14 June), the field tasks test the ability to pioneer and develop programming precision and mechanical dexterity that could one day take centre stage in field-scale machines.
Robots will perform various tasks to test navigational skills, selective sensing, soil-engaged weeding and, finally, a freestyle round.
The robots must negotiate a course through a growing maize crop to manually remove ‘weeds’. But to make the task more challenging the maize is not planted in straight rows.
The annual event also gives competitors the chance to share ideas and interact with leaders in the field of agronomic robotics.
So Good Luck to Harper Adams’ Masters students, Megan Platt, Alex Fisher, Rhys Thomas and, of course, ERIC.
