Plenty of Grain Aphids at the Oxford Innovation Centre
Aphids at the Oxford Innovation Centre
Varieties – Various
A particularly mild winter has resulted in high survival rates of both aphids and natural predators. Consequently aphid numbers in over wintered cereals and OSR remain very variable, with some crops suffering heavy infestations and others remain generally clean.
Recent spring conditions have increased overwintering adult activity and young nymphs are easily found at the Oxford Innovation site as populations start to increase. Pictured is the Grain Aphid.
The greatest threat the Grain Aphid poses to cereal crops is the transmission of virus’, such as BYDV. Thus, it is important to monitor populations and if consider control methods such as a pyrethroid spray to reduce transmission of BYDV.
