Breeders Insights

HYVIDO® is a family of very high yielding 6-row winter barley varieties and Bazooka is one of the next generation of Hyvido varieties, providing a significant step forward in barley yields.  Bazooka was launched as a Candidate variety in 2015 and gained automatic recommendation by the AHDB in 2016. It now takes the place of HYVIDO Volume as the top performing Winter Barley variety on the list, outperforming conventional varieties significantly, in all regions of the UK.  If you're looking for an out and out yielder of a variety then Bazooka is it.

Interestingly, Bazooka performs particularly well in the north with exceptional yield potential and a strong score of an 8 for lodging, despite it being a tall variety.  In our internal trials undertaken in Berwick we've seen this evidenced with Bazooka performing very well against other varieties, stranding strong right through until harvest.

All hybrid barley varieties have a large root mass and are able to use applied nitrogen very efficiently, so Bazooka does not require any more nitrogen than
a conventional winter feed or hybrid barley variety. However, in order to ‘feed’ its vigorous spring growth, it is important that early nitrogen availability is not limiting. Bazooka is also a tall-strawed variety which has good spring vigour, therefore a robust PGR programme is advised, especially on high fertility sites. To enhance grain fill, yield potential and grain quality Bazooka will benefit from a robust fungicide programme.
