Weeds are undesirable plants that, when growing within a crop, compete for nutrients, water and light and interfere with growing and harvesting operations. Without weed control, crop yields can be significantly reduced or crops may even fail.
Herbicides are used to prevent or eliminate weeds thereby reducing or eliminating the need for manual or mechanical weeding. Because they reduce the need for cultivation, herbicides can also help prevent soil erosion and water loss. Herbicides can be divided into two categories:
| 1. |
Selective Herbicides - that can be applied on specific crops without damaging them. |
| |
|
| 2. |
Non-selective Herbicides - that eliminate all plants (if absorbed by green tissue) and therefore are used before crop sowing or emergence, or as directed sprays. In recent developments, some non-selective herbicides can be used in the same way as selective herbicides on crops that are genetically modified in order to make them tolerant to specific herbicides. |
