Plants can be attacked by a great variety of fungal diseases. Fungicides are crucial to protect crop yield and quality by fighting fungal attack, and are typically used in programmes or in combination to provide effective control while minimising the emergence of fungal resistance.
Fungicides may have protectant activity; being applied before an attack and preventing infection. Others can have eradicant activity; being able to kill the pathogen a short time after infection has taken place, but before disease symptoms are seen. In some cases, both types of activity may be present.
Fungicides may be applied in response to an attack of a particular disease, or as part of a routine programme of use to prevent disease damage. The latter is particularly important where blemish-free produce is required for the market place, e.g. scab-free apples.
The main markets for fungicides are fruit and vegetables, cereals and rice.
