The Buzz project is providing UK arable farmers with practical answers to successfully create new habitats and boost farmland biodiversity, within a profitable and sustainable farming system. It is also helping farmers to understand the new skills and knowledge required. This innovative environmental research and demonstration project aims to put the habitat back - exploiting the full potential of areas targeted for habitat creation to boost biodiversity.
The project rigorously tests a range of habitats on six farms across the country, on varied soil types and conditions. These habitats have been designed to reflect current options under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, as well as other innovative ideas that could present viable and more productive alternatives to enhance biodiversity.
The overall aim of the Buzz Project is to enable farmers to 'Dial a Habitat', selecting the best option to attract their missing farmland species of insects and birds that should naturally be there. Farmers across the country will be able to go to a local site and see the project in action, providing the knowledge and skills to enable them to manage the habitats effectively.
The Buzz Project is sponsored by Syngenta, Unilever and DEFRA and is managed by The Farmed Environment Company, in association with The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
